A pelican had gotten her wings tangled in fishing line when she went after a hooked fish that was jumping. Luckily, there were gentlemen with knives nearby to help free her... thank goodness for men with sharp knives, gentle hands, and kind hearts.
These are some left-over edits from the summer. I was allowed access to Star Education's summer 'Everything Girly' camp in July of 2009, for the purpose of documentation by Star. It was the most bizarrely intimate experience of an intensely feminine environment, or at least the things that our society deems 'feminine.' Young girls, ages 5 - 11, were attending a three week camp in which they, gave make-overs, created personalized stationary, bedazzled jeans & camp shirts, designed personalized clothing and accessories, made feather boa picture frames, created jewelry, baked, knit, scrap booked, and made friends with other girls. All of the little girls were extremely friendly, open and remarkably confident as far as meeting a stranger and taking photos went. These are some of the images I shot during the 'make your own dress for a girly girl fashion show' day. It was a lot of fun, and a fascinating adventure.
The festival celebrates Lord Jagannatha, the Lord of the Universe, and is put on by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). The Festival of the Chariots is now performed in every country across the world and dates back thousands of years to Jagannatha Puri, India.
Hare Krishna
I shot August 2nd at the annual, 'Festival of the Chariots' in Venice Beach.
The Hare Krishna have been a subject of my photography for the last 4 years. I originally composed a two part photo essay while living in Urbana, IL, on the Urbana Chapter of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Here are two links to that piece: part 1 http://www.harekrsna.com/sun/news/03-07/news1081.htm , part 2 http://www.harekrsna.com/sun/news/03-07/news1092.htm .
Those links didn't work, but the addresses should. I'll fix it later, promise.
Thanks for looking. Comments and critiques are appreciated.
